Bill That would Make ‘Difference’ In New York Kid’s Lives Vetoed

A senior Hudson Valley official is angry. Governor Hochul “inexplicably vetoed an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently vetoed a bill that ensures public schools and schools for children with disabilities receive the same level of funding each year. Reports NY1.

The bill would require that tuition rates for approved preschool and school-age special education providers increase each year by the same percentage as overall state support for public schools, without taking into account actual reimbursable costs, according to Hochul.

Kathy Hochul recently vetoed a bill that ensures public schools and schools for children with disabilities receive the same level of funding each year.

“I have long supported guaranteeing services for special education children. I take this issue extremely seriously and after careful consideration determined that the bill is flawed and will ultimately not provide the best system to ensure that special education students receive appropriate services. The unique fee-setting methodology used by the state department of education and the division of the budget, the bill would undermine the important cost and budget calculation performed by the state for ensure proper reimbursement for these vital services, “Hochul stated while vetoing the bill.

Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro expressed his displeasure after Hochul vetoed the bill that passed with unanimous and bipartisan support.

“Governor Hochul inexplicably vetoed the opportunity to make a real difference in children’s lives. I am disappointed, to say the least. The fact that children with disabilities still do not receive the same funding is disgraceful. This bill, which was approved unanimously, both parties supported, is not something that should be delayed until ‘the right time’. The right time was years ago, “said Molinaro.

Other politicians are disappointed, but believe that the veto is just a setback.

“Although I am disappointed, I believe this setback will be temporary and I am optimistic to move forward,” said New York State Senator John W. Mannion of the 50th District.

Mannion is optimistic because on the same day that Hochul vetoed the bill he announced plans to include a historic $ 240 million increase in investment for approved private schools serving children with disabilities in his next 2022-2023 Executive Budget.

“This historic investment in schools serving students with disabilities, along with four bills that I am enacting, will make a huge difference in the lives of students, families and schools in every corner of New York,” said Hochul . “During my time in office, I have made it a priority to listen to the disability community and provide them with the resources and support they need to thrive. People with disabilities are committed to it: As your governor, I will always stand by your side. and fight for you. “
