Well kids, if you were praying to the snow gods, it worked. Friday morning saw snow across the state. Schools in the region closed or delayed their openings.
In many cases, districts asked for a delayed opening on Thursday, but by the time parents woke up on Friday morning they had switched to full closure. That’s what happened to my four-year-old son’s ABA autism therapy center.
What sparked this magical three-day weekend? It can be said that it was a combination of humidity in the upper atmosphere and temperatures.
But the kids in New Jersey know it was because they slept with their pajamas backwards. Or because ice cubes were flushed down the toilets.
For generations, kids have held superstitious beliefs about the calling of a snow day and have debated what will trigger one. Here is a brief summary.
The freezer compartment is apparently somewhat complicit in causing snow days. For one thing, at some point, the practice of taking ice cubes out of the refrigerator and flushing them down the toilet became a believed way to cancel school. But did you know that some say that you have to throw an ice cube for every inch of snow you want? Today it would be six cubes at some points.
Also, some believe that placing a white crayon inside your freezer overnight will lead to a snowy day. I don’t see any fine print on the Crayola package to confirm this.
Or take some ice cream out of your freezer if you have any and eat it. That is said to work too. It is not known if it has to be vanilla ice cream.
Then there’s the inside out of the pajamas. If it looks like these kids are ridiculous for believing that could affect any outcome, then why are you flipping your baseball cap over to a rally cap at the bottom of the ninth when your team is behind? Mmm-hmm.
Or you can always try doing the snow dance. Apparently this is it:
If you really want to be safe, put a spoon under your pillow. Just do Mom a favor and don’t do it with the same spoon you ate the ice cream with.
If all else fails, some say stack coins on your windowsill. Why the snow day fairy? it’s fine. And it’s probably the most Jersey method so far, I mean yeah, just bribing them.
