State police say a suspect was shot after he tried to ram his vehicle into officers following what began as a traffic incident Saturday.
New York State Police say they were patrolling northbound State Route 12 in Boonville at approximately 1:00 a.m. on January 15, 2022, when they saw a pickup truck heading south “at high speeds.” . According to officers, the truck driver was driving recklessly. They say they made a U-turn on State Route 12 in an attempt to catch up with the truck and stop the vehicle. They say that when they caught up with the truck, the “driver refused to stop and continued south on (Route) 12.”
As officers proceeded to drive in front of the vehicle, the driver allegedly struck the passenger side of the patrol vehicle and entered a parking area located on the south side of the highway, just north of Plank Road in Trenton, New York. The soldiers’ vehicle was marked. It seems that the situation has escalated. Police say, “As the troopers exited his patrol vehicle, the driver ignored verbal commands and drove the truck in the direction of the troopers, who then discharged his division-issued handgun. The suspect then drove south on Route 12 and stopped approximately a mile south and surrendered without further incident.”
The suspect was taken to Saint Elizabeth Hospital and treated for a single gunshot wound to the forearm. He was released back into the custody of the New York State Police, who say charges are pending.
The NYSP was assisted on scene by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and the Barneveld Fire Department.
Further investigation, as required by law, is expected in cases where an officer discharges a firearm causing injury.
The identity of the suspect in this case has not yet been released.
