Do You Know How Mrs. Fisher’s Chips Got Started in Rockford?

When it comes to produce made here in Rockford, Mrs. Fisher’s French Fries always top the list as one of my favorites. Some forced recipe changes may have changed its flavor a bit over the years, but I don’t care, I could still eat a full bag in one sitting if I let myself.

My whole family has been eating Mrs. Fisher’s fries for as long as I can remember. My grandparents always had buckets of these chips on their dining room sideboard when I was a kid, and it seems like only yesterday I was sneaking handfuls of them when no one was looking. For all these reasons and more, I am embarrassed to admit that today was the day I learned that my favorite French fries once had a different name and that the name change was the result of a broken marriage.

According to Mrs. Fisher’s French Fries website;

Ethel and Eugene Fisher started making these fries in 1932 from their home on the corner of Charles and 7th street. It was originally called Mr. Fisher’s Potato Chips, but when Eugene left Ethel during the depression, she changed it to Mrs. Fisher’s. Needing more space, the business moved into a small brick building on the corner of 6th St. and 5th Ave.

I was also fascinated to learn that Mrs. Fisher’s Potato Chips has managed to stay in the same family for the more than 80 years they have been in business. If you want to know what inspired the Fisher family to start making their delicious potato chip slices, this rockford souvenir the post is also very interesting…
