Four people were killed and three more seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident that occurred Monday night in Boone County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2017 Hyundai Elantra, driven by Keith L. Sumner of Rocheport, 19, was traveling southbound on the northbound lanes of US 63 (north of Columbia) just before 7:30 pm on Monday night. .
The Hyundai collided head-on with a 2004 Ford Escape heading north, according to the report. The accident occurred 1288 feet north of Lake Road.
The Hyundai was driven by 29-year-old Jessica D. McKinlay of Columbia. Both drivers were killed in the crash, as well as two passengers in the Ford: Christopher S. McClain, 34, of Columbia, and a 10-year-old girl, of Columbia. They were pronounced dead by Boone-Callaway County Medical Examiner Stacey Huck. The deceased were taken to the Parker-Millard Funeral Home in Columbia.
The injured were three minors: a six-year-old boy, a three-year-old girl and a two-year-old girl, all from Columbia. They were taken by ambulance to the University Hospital to receive treatment for serious injuries.
Both vehicles were totaled.
The report noted that the drivers were the only ones wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Two of the Ford passengers were ejected.
Northbound traffic was closed for approximately three hours while debris was cleared and an accident investigation was underway.
