Governor Hochul announced a plan that would make drastic changes in New York policy.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday that she is proposing term limits for many elected officials across New York State.
Hochul announced a plan to institute term limits for the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and comptroller as the first State of the State proposal of 2022.
Hochul proposes term limits for many elected officials throughout New York State.
“On the first day as governor, I made a commitment to restore trust in government and have taken steps every day to provide the open and ethical government that New Yorkers deserve,” said Hochul. “I want people to believe in their government again. With these bold reforms, we will make sure New Yorkers know that their leaders work for them and are focused on serving the people of this state.”
The governor will introduce a constitutional amendment to establish two consecutive term limits for elected officials throughout the state. Hochul wants a two-consecutive four-year term limit.

These bold reforms are aimed at increasing accountability and confidence in the integrity of state government, officials say.
Hochul’s proposed ban on elected officials receiving outside revenue comes after former Gov. Andrew Cuomo reportedly made millions writing a book on his handling of the COVID pandemic.
