Lawmaker Wants To Raise Bottle Return Price in New York

You may soon start getting more cash when you return a bottle in New York. Also, more bottles such as wine can be added to the return list.

A Hudson Valley legislator wants to increase the amount of New York’s bottle deposit refund.

Assemblyman Kevin A. Cahill (D-Ulster, Dutchess) seeks to significantly increase the deposit of returnable bottles. Cahill proposes a 50 percent increase. Raising the price from 5 cents to 10 cents.

A Hudson Valley legislator wants to increase the amount of New York’s bottle deposit refund.

“The Bottle Law is the most successful waste diversion and recycling program New York State has to offer,” Cahill told Spectrum News 1 in Albany. “Increasing the deposit and adding containers for wine, iced tea and sports drinks will further incentivize the return of these materials and remove litter from our roads and waterways.”

Cahill proposes a 50 percent increase. Raising the price from 5 cents to 10 cents.

A bill was first introduced in 2002. It passed the New York State Assembly in 2005, but did not receive enough votes in the New York State Senate, News 10 reports.

The bill also calls for expanding the list of containers that can be returned. If passed, the legislation would also allow the following to be returned for 10 cents:

Cahill believes that adding these bottles and raising the price will incentivize more New Yorkers to return a bottle while eliminating litter across the state.

Environmental groups such as the New York Public Interest Research Group support the bill.

“Municipal recycling programs are suffering due to the large amount of glass being broken in recycling loads. Putting a deposit on wine and liquor bottles will significantly reduce the number of breakages we see in our municipal recycling stream and greatly increase recycling efforts with an updated law,” said Eric Wood, NYPIRG Hudson Valley Regional Coordinator.
