Mother Arrested in Michigan After Daughter’s Body Found in Oregon

The mother of a girl whose remains were found in a duffel bag in Oregon was arrested during a traffic stop in Detroit.

Police arrest the girl’s mother and her girlfriend

Authorities arrested Shawna Browning, 28, and his girlfriend, Lauren Harrison, 33, on Tuesday (11/30). Both women have been charged with aggravated murder for killing Browning’s daughter, 9-year-old Haley Mae Coblentz, according to the Oregon State Police.

Girl’s remains stuffed into a canvas bag

Almost a year ago, on December 10, 2020, police discovered the body of a young girl that had been stuffed into a duffel bag and hidden in a forest near a rest stop in Lincoln County, Oregon.

Because the body was not discovered for 30 to 60 days, detectives were unable to determine much about the victim and DNA samples were analyzed. It wasn’t until October of this year that the girl was identified as Coblentz, who was nine years old at the time of her death.

Law & Crime reports that the girl had never enrolled in school and that her mother and longtime partner had never reported the girl missing.

Oregon State Police Join Detroit FBI

“We were able to find them with the help of the FBI Detroit and yesterday they made a traffic stop and detained them both,” Captain Stephanie Bigman told KOIN-TV. “As a law enforcement officer, you are horrified and really just want to do everything you can to find those responsible for this.”

Browning and Harrison are currently in custody in Detroit, awaiting extradition to Oregon.
